Oil & Gas Contractor gets Project-Driven, Standardised and Fully Integrated Business System with IFS Applications™

The implementation of IFS Applications™ has enabled Rosenberg Verft to become more competitive in a very competitive industry. Based on standards and with a component architecture, IFS Applications gives Rosenberg the overview and control of its projects that it needs to remain agile and meet — even anticipate — the changing needs of its customers.

Needed Standardised, Integrated Software

Back in 1997, many of the challenges facing Rosenberg were typical of those confronting players in the offshore contractor industry today. They had installed a number of subsystems that met immediate needs but which did not communicate with each other. For example, communication between the different engineering disciplines and the production environment was weak. Another problem was the length of time it took to consolidate project accounting and technical progress in the projects. Rosenberg saw the need for standardisation and integration to ensure the success of future operations, especially with respect to project work and internal workflows.

Benefits

  • More agile, efficient project management
  • Better overview of operations
  • Greater cost control
  • Improved engineering processes
  • More efficient supply chain
  • Better inventory management
  • More efficient, cost-saving purchasing routines
  • Comprehensive EPCI functionality

Project-Driven Solution

Rosenberg looked at a number of business applications vendors before opting for IFS. One of the main reasons for selecting IFS was its understanding of the offshore industry and the complexities involved in an EPCI contract when it comes to overviewing project deliverables, time and cost. Another factor was IFS’ ability to deliver a project-driven, integrated solution with all the functionality required to handle the entire lifecycle of a project —from early design right through material management, fabrication and project follow-up. Rosenberg was also impressed by the leading-edge technological platform on which IFS Applications is built. IFS focused on providing standard software which ensured fewer costly modifications. With IFS Applications, Rosenberg got a solution that met its present needs and can easily grow with the company in the future.

Greater Competitive Edge with Uniform IT Platform

“Since 1997, IFS has helped us increase our competitive edge in a constantly tight market. We recently bought the Engineering Register and now we have access to all features in the industry solution for EPCI contractors. Connection to the NORSOK standard will considerably improve our engineering and purchasing processes,” says Bjørn Thomas Bache, VP Engineering & Procurement.

One of the major benefits of implementing IFS Applications is that Rosenberg now has a standardised IT platform that is used throughout the company. This means that it is easy to access information—and the information is up-to-date, uniformly structured, and accurate. An integrated project management system that supports EPCI contracts is a major benefit but also fundamental for success. Project planning, control and follow-up are now quicker and more secure. In fact, improvements in project cost control, and profitability and progress can be measured on a daily basis.

Material management and fabrication are key processes for Rosenberg. IFS Applications has strong support for material, inventory and supplier catalogues that ensures an optimal material management process at Rosenberg. The key benefit, however, is the tight connection between the overall project plan, material demands and fabrication. All drawing parts belong to a project activity and have a scheduled required date. While scheduling the MTO, they receive a complete survey of material requirements and staff resources needed for the project, including the required dates. This helps ensure the availability of materials and resources. This integrated approach has eliminated a considerable amount of quality-related costs because there is less re-work and missing materials, and delays are fewer.

Full warehouse control enables Rosenberg to track and trace details on materials issued to different production processes. Status reports are available at any level, and progress details are rolled back to the overall project to ensure full control. IFS Applications also enables Rosenberg to integrate the engineering process into the supply chain in a more efficient manner. The engineering register gives Rosenberg full EPCI support from pilot study through basic design, basic and detailed engineering and commissioning to operation and maintenance. With a  comprehensive, multi-discipline engineering register for process, electrical, instrumentation and AEC/piping engineering, including integrated document management, Rosenberg increased the efficiency of the early project phases. One of the major benefits here is the tight interaction between engineering and purchasing, which allows Rosenberg to use design parts in the detailed engineering phase and thereby postpone purchase commitments. In addition, they can easily sort and group similar equipment so purchasers can improve price and delivery terms.

Web-Based Interface

Rosenberg also plans to utilise the web-based interface. The opportunity to collaborate in real-time with suppliers saves both time and money. Some areas where Rosenberg expects to benefit from using the web are project collaboration, document collaboration and sub-contracting. Bjørn Thomas Bache concludes, “This will also improve the way we communicate with our operators and partners. Thanks to the open architecture of IFS Applications, we found it easy from the start to build interfaces and exchange data externally, and the web will increase these capabilities.”
