IFS secures new contracts with Three Gorges Group

IFS, the global enterprise applications company, has signed an agreement with China Yangtze Power Corporation (CYPC) concerning the implementation of IFS Applications at two new mega-hydropower stations on the Jinsha River, China. CYPC also owns Three Gorges, the largest hydropower plant in the world. The solution will support the corporation’s long-term growth strategy and is scheduled to be delivered in June 2012.

China is currently investing heavily in carbon-free energy. Besides hydropower, China is also expanding its nuclear energy capacity by building 25 new reactors. The new power plants will tenfold China’s energy production and are scheduled to be fully operational in 2020. Power generation lifecycle management was the topic of discussion when a delegation from China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) paid a visit to IFS’s headoffice in January, 2011.

IFS was selected in competition with SAP and Oracle. One of the deciding factors for CYPC was IFS’s proven track record within enterprise asset management both in China and globally. Another important aspect was IFS’s future-proof, agile technology, perfectly encapsulated by IFS Enterprise Explorer, a cutting-edge, web-based interface.

CYPC has been an IFS customer since 2002, when IFS Applications was selected as the plant management solution for the Three Gorges hydropower plant. One of the ambitions is to consolidate all sites into one database, including the Three Gorges site. The current agreement is part of CYPC’s four new hydropower plants on the Jinsha River. The two power plants which will be running IFS Applications will produce electricity 30.75 billion kilowatt-hours and 57.12 billion kilowatt-hours separately when fully operational.

IFS Applications will be used for production management for 400 users in two hydropower plants and one dispatch center. The solution will support CYPC in establishing advanced management concepts and workflows while improving work efficiency, safety and production costs.

“Our goal has been to invest in the latest technology to support our ambition to become the leading light within hydroelectric power generation. In IFS Applications, we have found a system that can keep pace with our long-term growth strategy while ensuring multi-plant support, work safety, efficiency and user-friendliness,” said Zhang Cheng, President of CYPC.

“We are very pleased that CYPC has chosen IFS as its strategic IT software partner, thereby renewing its trust in our solutions. IFS has many decades of experience within the energy and utilities industry, our solutions are therefore industry-perfected, a claim few other companies can make. Together with CYPC, we will work towards the goal of propelling Chinese hydropower into a leading global position,” said Alastair Sorbie, President and CEO of IFS.
