How to utilize market innovations
Market innovation
We adapt market innovations and turn them into products that offer real business value.
Recent decades have seen an unparalleled succession of technologies and formats, all claiming to be the end of the line in terms of technological sophistication. Of course, very few of these innovations have actually managed to withstand the test of time.
Even though this trend is most obvious in the field of consumer technology, the world of business software has also been greatly affected. Today, identifying and adapting market innovation is a key success factor for ERP providers.
We are always searching for intelligent solutions that can simplify users’ work processes. One of the most promising areas is augmented reality applications that combine your smartphone’s camera, GPS, compass and gyroscope, to analyze the surroundings and produce instant feedback to the user. Applications such as these are ideal for companies with mobile processes—for instance those routinely performed by service technicians.
As our ambition has never been to invent new trends, we are constantly looking for existing ideas that offer real business value. We ask ourselves: “How can this technology benefit the user?” If the answer is “it can’t”, we leave it by the wayside. If we find real potential in the idea, we implement it into our portfolio.
Whatever technology we choose to explore, it must always center on the user and offer a productive, elegant and enjoyable work environment.

Cecilia Fu
In 2006 it became clear that National Oilwell Varco (NOV) in Etten-Leur had to replace its existing ERP system. After a thorough study of available solutions, NOV selected IFS Applications. “We now have a stable and user-friendly system that has improved our information delivery considerably”, says Rudi Kerkhofs, director of Operations at NOV.
In 2010, Sanitec, one of the largest players in the global bathroom products market, expanded its use of IFS Applications with its Region North operations (to its subsidiaries IFÖ, IDO and Porsgrund). This resulted in standardization and clearly enhanced efficiency between subsidiaries—a prerequisite, according to Sanitec, for successful future growth.
With the help of IFS, Tomra has streamlined its service organization, which services more than 8,000 recycling machines in stores throughout Sweden. To optimize its service processes, Tomra implemented IFS Applications. The result was faster service, smoother administration and more satisfied customers.
The implementation of IFS Applications in Mosty-Lodz was one of the first implementations of an ERP system in the construction sector where the solution was designed and installed especially from a project-based point of view. The IFS project management solution is used to analyze the stages of construction projects and contract profitability.
With IFS, Dairy Australia gained full visibility of their project portfolio, better utilization of resources, consolidated operations and achieved quicker and more informed decision making. Furthermore, they went live as scheduled and didn’t disrupt operations in their latest ERP upgrade.
Management Science Associates, Inc. (MSA), headquartered in Pittsburgh, is a leader in the development of analytical software and information-based systems. The company provides information-based solutions for more than 300 clients worldwide.
Headquartered in Eugene, Oregon, the Willamette Valley Co. supplies goods and services to manufacturing and forest-product industries as well as to consumers. The company consists of five divisions and three subsidiaries built around a base of eight manufacturing locations, three research and development laboratories, two engineering facilities, and marketing, sales and service organizations supporting sales worldwide.
Implementation projects are often complex—the key to success is clear communication and a common understanding. But that’s often hard to achieve in today’s global business world. To do this requires people with a clear grasp of the issues, the ability to get to the root of problems and a burning desire to make sure our customers get the most out of their investment. People like Erik Lind.
Sounds simple, doesn’t it? But for Cecilia Fu, applications analyst working out of IFS’ office in Tucson, Az., ‘just getting on with it’ meant a three-week schedule of non-stop work and travel that took her from Tucson to Korea and back—via the Netherlands in Europe. Why? To make sure that key customers could successfully implement projects on schedule.
On 1 May 2008, NOV went live with IFS Applications after a period of thorough preparation, in which NOV described all its processes. Kerkhofs says that a major success factor for this project has been the ‘chemistry’ with IFS and the knowledge IFS has of NOV’s industry-specific processes.
Sanitec upgraded and expanded its business software from IFS with components for financials, sales, logistics, and maintenance throughout its Nordic subsidiaries and replaced a legacy manufacturing solution with manufacturing software from IFS. Generally, replacing its ERP solution has given Sanitec greater agility now that Region Nordic can coordinate and centralize processes.
In connection with a reorganization process in the fall of 2005, Tomra decided that the company would use the same business software throughout its Nordic operations. After a thorough pilot study and procurement process, Tomra opted for IFS Applications, primarily because of the support offered by the component-based solution for streamlining the service process.
Mosty-Lodz decided to implement an ERP solution that would support all its departments. However, key operational factors were project management and logistics, including issues related to transport. A joint implementation team consisting of IFS consultants and key users from Mosty-Lodz was established to verify and modify all the details related to the implementation.
Dairy Australia required an integrated system in Projects, Sub Contract Management, Financials and Reporting. In September 2010, Dairy Australia did a feasibility study and identified their requirements. By December, the new ‘pilot’ system was getting built and running in parallel with the existing system, and by January, testing and debugging was in its final stages.
One of MSA’s legacy systems was unable to handle projects adequately. For instance, the system could take a month to close, reports often took up to six weeks to complete, and it was unable to reconcile data. Another problem was that the system was not scalable and therefore could not keep pace with the very rapid rate of growth within the enterprise. MSA invited proposals from a number of business application suppliers, including SAP, JDEdwards, and IFS. After scrutinizing the various offerings, MSA opted for IFS Applications.
The previous legacy system that we had was not ideal,” Willamette Valley CIO Gerald Nakamura said. “It was more a separate, disparate system that required you to log in to generate the transport documents, so there was a lot of duplication of effort. We were really running two systems instead of one integrated package.
Based at IFS’ R&D facility in Linköping, Sweden, Erik’s expertise was called on to trouble-shoot a project at a U.S. customer site. True to IFS’ policy of keeping things simple, he resolved the issues over the phone—saving both time and money for the customer. Erik’s swift analysis brought new focus to the project and also helped the customer see even greater potential in the solution.
Were the customers satisfied? Very much so. In fact, the Korean customer has asked Cecilia to be there for the next phase of the implementation.
Consultants play an important role in these kinds of projects. IFS knew our organization and our processes from the inside. That has contributed in a major way to the success of this project.
The IFS team of consultants was very strong. They knew what they were doing and understood how we work. That—and continuity—is extremely important to us.
We felt very secure working with IFS consultants throughout the process. You could tell they were used to dealing with companies whose operations are project-based and service-intensive. They were with us all the way during the implementation, and there was always a quick and helpful response from support whenever we had questions
We really appreciate the cooperation with IFS consultants. They are professionals and always seek optimal solutions. This is especially important considering that this was one of the first implementations of an ERP system in the Polish construction industry. We were learning from each other.
The IFS team was highly professional, and held our hands every step of the way. If we ever had a question, it was like we had a direct Dairy Australia hotline! The consultants from IFS would respond very quickly and confidently.
We were impressed by the honesty of IFS. There were no hidden items whatsoever, and they were always available to listen to, and resolve, whatever issues arose.
A critical part of our decision revolved around our feeling about IFS and its people. We partner with customers to find solutions that benefit them. IFS is similar—it wants to be an integral part of our business.
