China Three Gorges Project Corporation (CTGPC) submitted an entry for IT innovation with its project named ePMS (electronic Production Management Information System). During an award ceremony held on 22 September 2004 in Singapore, China Three Gorges Project Corporation was named the Winner in the ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) category. Dr. Jin Heping, CIO of CTGPC, said, “It is indeed an honor to be presented such a prestigious recognition. The ePMS system was designed and built over 20 months in partnership with experts from IFS and CTGPC’s technology division. Our objective was to utilize technology to enable the world’s largest hydropower plant to operate smoothly—with minimal overheads and no disruptions. The web-based system we have today allows all of our front and back-end employees to have a common view of critical business data in real-time and has enabled us to improve our work quality and business processes to a large extent.” The ePMS was built using IFS Applications and spans many functions, from equipment maintenance, inventory, plant operation, and safety to finance, human resources and business performance. The system went live in December 2003 and manages a total installed capacity of 18,200 megawatts and 350 employees. The judging panel for the MIS Innovation Awards included 15 regional judges who were selected from user or analyst organizations. Entries were evaluated based on a checklist that included scores for organization value (i.e. how the project benefited the organization), innovation, internal and external customer value, and financial metrics.
About Three Gorges Hydropower Plant
The Three Gorges Project is the largest water conservation project in the world, located on the Yangtze River in Hubei province, central China. The project is aimed at improving flood control, producing electricity, and improving navigability on the river. Upon completion, Three Gorges will be the largest hydropower plant in the world, with a total installed capacity of 18,200 MW and an annual output of nearly 84.7 billion kWh. Six units have already been put into operation in 2003.
