Elastomeric Group

Elastomeric is a Group of Companies comprising of three facilities of which two are set up for the Manufacture of rubber based products and the other for the manufacture of tooling for the rubber and plastic industry.

The major factors which has contributed to rapid growth has been the continuous emphasis on upgrading of technology, dynamism in the diversification of its product range, strict adherence to quality management procedures, timely deliveries, competitive pricing and prompt response to customer inquiries.

Elastomeric Engineering Company was founded in 1981. From very small beginnings, it has expanded its activities over the years, to become one of Sri Lanka's largest exporters of rubber based products.

Elastomeric is a part of Hexagon Polymers which has a turnover of 240 MEUR. Hexagon Polymers is owned by Hexagon AB, a company listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange.

Challenge

Company has been expanding its production capacity over last few years to cope-up with the increasing demand. Due to higher transaction volume, planning had become a major bottle neck for the process. In addition, existing financial system was not integrated to the other departments which made repetitive data entry and validations. Since documents were not in electronic form it was a cumbersome task to find relevant documents as and when needed.

The Solution

Considering operational difficulties and future expansions Elastomeric was looking for a business solution which fits in to their complicated production environment. It was a challenging task to find a system which can integrate all three companies and their departments together. By evaluating several systems and their capabilities, Elastomeric chose IFS to strengthen their operations in all three companies. Key criterion for selection was user-friendliness of the system, flexibility of the solution to grow with the business needs and the local support.

Implementation

The implementation started in 2004 in Elastomeric Tools and Dies (pvt) Ltd, which produces tools for their internal operations. To smoothen the implementation with available resources, it was decided to use phase-out approach in different SBU’s.   The company changed their hardware equipments and restructured the IT infrastructure to make all departments online with the new system. The top management commitment towards the implementation helped the IFS consultants to give a total on the job training with quick fix solutions for teething problems.

Advantages

After the implementation, Elastomeric has been able to plan all the orders which are to deliver within next 6 months and to make changes to the existing delivery plan according to business requirements and production orders were generated according to the delivery schedules. Changes in the production flow were reflected in the plan as a result of the dynamic scheduling capacity of the system. Communication between departments is made easier than it was before by eliminating redundant data entry activities and information sharing across all the departments. IFS/Document management system has helped Elastomeric to manage documents including ISO documents in the system.
