SICPA

After successfully rolling out the pilot project, SICPA is using IFS Applications to streamline its operations. Easy to roll out worldwide, IFS Applications will ensure standard business processes throughout the company. Improved order fulfillment, better inventory management and more accurate reporting will give SICPA better cash flow management and greater costs control.

Too many disparate systems

Like many other growing companies, SICPA found itself with a large number of geographically dispersed subsidiaries that were locally managed and using a variety of different business systems. However, an increasing awareness of the benefits of a corporate approach to business, combined with the need to streamline processes and better control costs, led company management to look for a solution that would easily integrate subsidiaries of different sizes at remote sites with head office and the major plants.

Global solution with standard components

SICPA chose IFS for a number of reasons. SICPA’s IFS program manager explains, “We wanted a company with the ability to execute globally, which understand local languages and cultures, and which offered a product based on standards to support our specific processes. Furthermore, we didn’t want to work via partners or distributors. With KPMG, we set up a scenario that vendors had to fulfill. The best solution came from IFS.” The fact that IFS Applications runs on Oracle and that IFS offered a packaged implementation methodology also helped to tip the scales in IFS’ favor. After conducting an implementation study in Switzerland, SICPA decided to go with IFS.

Focused implementation ensures easier rollouts

SICPA went live with IFS Applications at its Finnish site in October 2002. The IFS and SICPA implementation teams built up a “kernel”, i.e. a package of the functionality required at every SICPA subsidiary. Using IFS Business Modeler, standard processes were defined, the database was populated with basic data, and the few customizations that were required were made. This means that subsequent rollouts at other SICPA sites will be easier and faster since they will not have to start from scratch.

“IFS Applications is a strong product”

The first benefit SICPA enjoyed was the fact that operations were hardly affected when the system went live in Finland. After the second day, production was up to 80% of its total capacity and by the end of the first week, the site was running at normal levels. “The go live was very smooth,” says SICPA’s IFS program manager, “and was facilitated by the very open dialog between us and IFS. We worked more as partners than customers.”

For a geographically dispersed company like SICPA, with a large number of remote sites, getting accurate figures on time can be a problem. Now, with IFS Applications, the quality of reports is greatly enhanced and timelier because the system is easy to use and completely integrated. This makes it easier to respond more rapidly to change, which means that critical decisions can be made faster. Faster access to sales figures is essential for achieving KPIs. The result is improved cash flow and better business. IFS Applications also makes it easier to consolidate accounts, giving SICPA management a detailed global overview of operations, which enables the company to streamline business processes and thereby save time and money.

Better inventory management is another benefit that SICPA is realizing since implementing IFS Applications. This is a crucial element for the company as most orders have to be fulfilled within 12–24 hours. The legacy systems previously used were unable to provide the required level of inventory visibility. Today, SICPA gets a clear picture of what is in stock and where it is, with a resulting positive effect on costs and margins, speed of delivery and, ultimately, customer satisfaction. SICPA also handles recipe management via IFS Applications. With tens of thousands of formula and very stringent environmental, health and safety regulations to comply with, this is another crucial part of the business.

“IFS Applications is a very strong product that we hope will help us manage our business critical operations and thus maintain our strong position in the industry,” SICPA Group’s IS director adds, and concludes by noting that “one of the most impressive aspects of our project so far has been the excellent collaboration and partnership approach of IFS. It has been a pleasure to work with them.”
