Why field service requires an open, industry standard approach to IoT
Why do field service organizations need open, non-proprietary Internet of Things (IoT) technology in their field service management software?
- May manufacture a product and sell it along with an aftermarket service contract. These companies may find differentiating their service offering difficult if they embed their competitors’ IoT technology in their service offering.
- Often support multiple product lines from different vendors. A proprietary IoT discovery tool may not play as well with multiple product lines as with equipment in the manufacturer’s technology stack.
- Need to adopt standard technologies that will help them develop standards for machine monitoring and integrate with the field service management software of their choice. Proprietary IoT discovery tools may be sold with field service or other software that leads, again, to vendor lock-in.
