Kazakhmys completes IFS Applications rollout
IFS, the global enterprise applications company, announces that Kazakhmys Corporation, one of the world’s largest copper suppliers, has completed the rollout of IFS Applications for procurement and inventory automation across the entire corporation.
In mid-2010, the pilot project for implementing IFS Applications was finished at all enterprises located in Kazakhmys’s East Kazakhstan industrial area as well as at Kazakhmys’s procurement unit in Almaty and its Ust-Kamenogorsk branch. After successful completion of the project, the solution was rolled out to all other industrial areas of Kazakhmys.
In connection with the implementation of the solution across 100 enterprises within the three remaining Kazakhmys industrial areas—Zhezkazgan, Balkhash and Karaganda—the corporation purchased 1,000 additional licenses. The project also included the head office’s investment management department and all branches of Kazakhmys’s procurement unit.
IFS Applications is used for logistics at all stages of the production cycle; from copper ore mining plants to fabricated products manufacturers—unifying all procurement processes. During the execution of the project, special emphasis was placed on managing inventory availability and operational control of supply status.
In order to carry out the implementation with minimal involvement from IFS consultants, key users were trained during the pilot project. This was one of the project’s distinguishing features—ensuring the competence of both key and end users. This approach allowed Kazakhmys to reduce costs significantly and to secure a quick return on its investment.
Kazakhmys is the largest copper producer in Kazakhstan and in the top ten worldwide. Kazakhmys’s production cycle is fully integrated; from mining ore through to the production of finished copper metal. The copper division has operating sites across Kazakhstan with 15 open pit and underground mines, 10 concentrators and two smelting and refining complexes. The Copper division owns coal mines and power plants, which supply sufficient energy for all the operations. In addition to the captive power plants, the Group owns 50% of Ekibastuz GRES-1, the largest power plant in Kazakhstan. The Group manages over 20% of Kazakhstan's power supply. The copper division also produces significant volumes of other metals as by-products, including zinc, silver and gold, which represent around 25% of revenue.
Fully integrated production and valuable by-products make Kazakhmys one of the lowest cost copper producers in the world. These advantages, combined with a large reserve base, give the Group a strong platform for future growth and development.
